"Stop what you're doing. Think of a time you were frightened. Now I'm not talking about being scared of an exam or a meeting with your boss. I mean, being uncontrollably, irrevocably petrified. You're body shaking, your mind racing. Listen to the ticking of the clock. Tick, Tick, Tick…. Take your seat. Let’s begin!

Jamie Daws is a master of creating awesome magic effect with a dark twist.  Magic that has your spectators at the edge of their seats. His thoughts, routines and scripting always send a shiver down your spine.

Spooky magic always seems to get an unreal reaction and on this course Jamie will teach you the secrets.

THEMING:

In this section we begin with talking about macabre themes. More importantly, how to structure them and to elaborate on them using techniques actors use on a daily basis. Being mindful of taboo subjects that may upset or disturb people and making sure you are tasteful with your decisions. We discuss how to build atmosphere.  Paying particular attention to tonality and pacing to hook your audience and suck them in. How to make your story so believable that they will buy into everything you're saying. We’ll talk about taking an everyday effect and giving it a bizarre twist. As an example, I’ll go over my presentation of Magic Smith’s ‘Double Cross’ which I use in every gig exactly as I’ll show you the effect  I’ll explain why I’ve chosen to perform it this way and how I believe it adds to the effect. We will talk about tension, hypnotic language, rituals and we will watch one of my favourite short films which will make you scream. (You WILL want to show your friends!) We will finish of by talking about putting everything together in performance.

PROPS:

In this section, we will discuss props and the importance of them in your performance. Everuthing from playing cards to photos. We will be looking at ageing props to make them fit the themes we are using. I’ll introduce you to my China doll called Greta! Look at some props I have aged for auditions and acts over the years. We will look at the emotional importance of the props we are using in macabre effects and why they work.  How to upscale props to make them play for larger audiences and how to use props you may already own and turn them into pieces of bizarre interest.

METHOD:

In the final section we discuss method! How method plays a huge part in scary tricks. Keeping method simple to focus on presentation and making methods part of the effect ritual.

We will look at SCARED, a haunted deck effect and how one subtle change turns a magic trick into a creepy and unsettling ritual for your audience. Then we will move onto photo effects. We will discuss the first creepy effect I ever created, The Burial and how the theming, incredibly simple methodology and compelling script create for a wonderfully unsettling effect.

We will also touch on SCREAM and He’s Not Here. Again, examining the structure, the theming, the props and the methods involved. As an extension, we will briefly discuss simple switch techniques for photos which makes effects like ‘He’s Not Here’ possible and can help a small effect play to a much larger audience.  Moving onto using peoples misconceptions, as part of the method. We talk about Moz Powrie’s fantastic "Decisions” and how I use it as a make-shift Ouija board.  I’ll also show you a few different versions of Moz’s gimmick that I have used. Then I will explain how to turn the classics into modern pieces of bizarre by scaling up or down props for modern audiences.

If you have ever performed a spirit slate routine and wanted to expand the effects you can do with them in a modern and close up environment, you will love this idea!

Lastly, we will discuss how to put everything together and the best time to use these effects in your working gigs. The benefits they can have to you as a performer and how every party and repeat booking I get, I always get asked to perform one of my bizarre effects.

So if you love the creepy and macabre and would like to discover how and why you should be using them in your working repertoire, I can't wait for you to get stuck into this disturbing glance into modern bizarre magic!

I'm very late to the party but...what a great value! This is probably the longest download I've ever seen. There is a ton of material in here, on top of the tips for making some of your own props. Fabulous work, and a great place to start if you want to try your hand at some spooky magic.

I have so much positive things to say about todays course and couldn't be more grateful for a company like Alakazam to have great production with amazing talent of Jamie. I'm not afraid of anything, nor do I get scared as I am a horror finatic however; this production setup with the special FX you guys threw in with the music, and Jamie's setup, words, teachings was honestly the scariest experience I have gone through. You don't know what to expect at every moment Jamie goes into his special creepy box lol. It is truly amazing and so glad I was able to watch this beginning to end in New York, USA Live :) To add: This is exactly why i wish i lived in the UK as all my time in magic over the year people in the USA don't give bizarre/ haunted magic great reviews. Today was the icing on the cake of why people here write not great/ bad reviews on products you all today named out as the best effects in the UK - and that is because this kind of magic involves a lot more work on your presentation and it is storytelling. People get whatever props they get and expect that to be it and to say a few lines.. similar to how Jamie changed the double cross routine to the haunted version which i absolutely love and I have great ideas for things like exact change by Gregory Wilson, other coin/card/mentalism fx that just trying to think more of making it my own & more about the words I say versus the props I have. It was great to have a course focus on things that are infact great magic, but really today focused on how well Jamie does & gives all people inspiration because of the stories to present it in a way to be remembered and give the spectator an experience, not just a magic trick. I am very glad to have been able to do this academy course and will be reviewing too. If i can make another one I would love to if not I am glad I attended this one and thankful for being connected to those that attended Keep up the great work Alakazam you are the #1 company in the world in this industry and I always speak nothing but the highest class of everything you do and release. Your favorite customer, - Andrew :) Total experience exceeds 10/10!

Loved that tonight. So much more than just scary magic. Should have been called Super Stort-telling Sorcery. The breakdown of the magic circle routine alone wascworth the price. I'm not normally a sentimental person but I had goosebumps. Jamie is a lovely guy. Thanks again everyone.

Really enjoyed this one. I always thought bizarre magic was not that practical or entertaining...boy, Jamie nailed that one for me! All the material I want to go and perform. Great advice, great chat and impeccably produced by Alakazam. This really is the best format for learning.

This was my first Academy course and it was brilliant. Jamie went through just about everything he's done and explained the ideas in great detail. It was a fun, long evening of magic and I would highly recommend these courses to anyone. The picture quality and sound were great and the camera technology with overhead shots meant you can understand easily. I can't wait for my next two courses.

OK, I can't recommend the Alakazam Online Academy enough. I haven't missed one yet and how could I as they are just full of incredible hints tips and great magic. In this one, Jamie was awesome. He generously shared with us his routines, his thoughts on scripting and the power of storytelling. Priceless! If you missed it, sign up for the next one you will not regret it.

I was going to post a review tomorrow after re-watching this course, but I am too excited to not post one now. Jamie provided solid and well though out routines that incorporate story telling, magic, spirits and even a bit of mentalism. This was my second course taken and can easily say that the Academy is a BARGAIN by any measure. Daws' creativity and innovation, even when utilizing standard effects to achieve a dramatic and affecting end, was clearly on display here.. I often perform séance and story telling effects and there were several ideas that I will incorporate immediately. Cannot recommend these courses highly enough.

This academy w/ Jamie was a bit different than the others (which are great) ... I won't make this long but will tell you that if you want to learn how to create incredible 'props' and put them into an 'awesome story'.. you WILL learn some of the most important information in magic.. and a hint.. it's not about a difficult 'move' ... whao, it put so much into light for me. THANK YOU, Jamie for such VALUABLE info that we all can take and USE moving forward! Pure GOLD!
